There are two fixtures that we agree, for sure, NEED TO GO!
Ugly Light Fixture #1:
Is the light above the medicine cabinet in the guest bathroom. I snapped the picture before Kyle started to paint the bathroom the other weekend. Just look at that! We are talking bare bulbs people! I do wonder what happened to the rest of the fixture that must have been there originally. Where did the other part of it go?I've been scouring sites online for inspiration. I love Rejuvenation.
I assume something like Rufus (pictured below) must have been what was there before our sad little light lost it's hood. So, in keep with the period of the house, something like that fits and might look pretty darn cute!
After Rufus, I would really like something a little more midcentury modern as a possibility. The only picture I could grab off the Rejuvenation site is the bronzed version. But here is Donald (hehe. I just love the names they give them too)! Thankfully they offer this light in a nice polished chrome.
These two are my favorites so far. I was reading an issue of Atomic Ranch while in Borders the other day, and while we do not own a ranch, Kyle and I both appreciate that midcentury asthetic. I remember seeing an ad for another retro lighting website, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was...something about schoolhouse lighting? I will Google of course, but anyone out there know what I am talking about?Anway, after we settle on something for the bathroom, the mother of all ugly lighting is located in our kitchen. I love our kitchen, I hate our kitchen. I love the ideas I have in my head for the kitchen, I hate the idea of how much it's going to cost us to see those ideas come to fruition...c'e la vie.
But this is about the mother of all ugly lighting, right? Here she is folks.
Ugly Light Fixture #2:
She's round, she's LARGE, and glows super green. She's florescent! And has to go.I keep trying to find where the line between retro vintage COOL, and retro vintage KITSCHY overkill falls, and I hope and pray I don't fall victim to it. With that said, I do like the idea of trying to keep most of the lighting in the house somewhat period appropriate (except my darling dining room pendant of course). So, good taste be damned, here's one light I was thinking would look rather adorable in the kitchen...that being the dream kitchen in my head.
That is Lombard. Lombard is much. much smaller than what is there now, and with our tiny kitchen I think would just be more appropriate scale wise. I also like the blue band. Altough Rejuvenation seems to offer the same shade with different band colors...there is a light green and also a yellow banded shade that would both work equally as well.I hope to place the order for at least one light fixture this weekend. Speaking of weekend, I don't have many home improvements planned...I might do some more sewing, or tackle a shelving issue, but we will see.
I think the loungy feeling of the Labor Day weekend is only hitting me now.

I like Rufus! Do they have him (hee hee) with chrome instead of black?
Also, if you like Lombard (I do too) then check out Schoolhouse Electric... There's lots like that. Pretty.
p.s. Nice lighting is SO expensive!
DULCIE! Thank you! It was Schoolhouse Electric that I couldn't think of the name of! OMG awesome!
They don't offer Rufus in chrome, which stinks...it's either black, white, or green porcelain...
And seriously, I can't even look at the prices on Rejuvenation. haha. I am clicking add to cart without looking. LOL
Flickr is a great place to see some of those fixtures in real homes. Here are some.

Hi. My name is Lara Berch. I have just launched a new website with step by step art tutorials. I was wondering if it's possible to exchange links with you. http://www.laraberch.com
Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely
Lara
Cute site Lara! I've added you to my blog roll. Good luck with the new site!
I love Lombard! I also really like Rufus (assume it's a take on the Snoopy lamp of that period). I don't like the bronze one, it's kinda demanding too much atomic attention to me. Can you print out big color photocopes of them and tape them up in the room to give yourself a better impression of what they'd look like in the room?
Hi Kim... I love Lombard! I think it would look awesome in your kitchen. You have great retro taste! Keep up the good work.
Upstate, that's an excellent idea!!
And thanks Darla!
I just checked out a great link from Domino mag, maybe you should check this store out b/c I saw this, which I love. Not bad, huh?
oh no! I don't think the link works...when I click on it, all it does is send me back to the main page of my blog...weird!
Oh, your ugly fixture has NOTHING on the one in my master bathroom!! :)
Have you considered sconces on the side of the mirror in the bathroom instead of one overhead?
Its more work to wire it (and more holes to patch!) but like I wrote in the post it seems like all the bath inspiration pics I love have the sides sconces instead.
Weird. Here is that link again for a double light fixture (same link as below) http://www.homeclick.com/web/catalog/product_detail.aspx?pid=33823
ohhh! that's cute! And I don't think I would have to worry so much about the overhang...hmm! Thanks so much for the link!!
Ariana,
I have been checking them out. There are a couple on Rejuvenation that I love. Very art deco and pretty...
stop tempting me! haha.
I wonder how good Kyle would be with electric work?! hmm
We have an Otis in our living room (Rufus's younger brother) in polished chrome. I love the light it puts out... but in the bathroom, I dunno. It doesn't really spread the light around, IYKWIM.
For our bathrooms, we ended up picking out some $2 fixtures, very plain, very 40's/50's. Here's a pic:

And the other Home Depot b-room fixtures:

They aren't ideal, but they were super cheap and fit the bill temporarily until we can find some old fixtures at our local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store ;-)
